Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Poster Sacramento 2008

In 2008 was in the middle of a period where I was doing a lot of single-color pieces with a focus on symmetrical compositions. It was a reaction to getting frequently complimented on my use of color. That’s a great complement to receive of course but it’s always good to push out on the margins of any box you find yourself in, especially with regard to your personal style. So for a couple years I worked hard to restrain my color palettes, often opting to do single color or even just black and white pieces. I thought the sharper focus on content and composition would help me refine those skills without leaning so much on cool color schemes. Since simple black and white prints can look a bit too plain regardless of how great the art and design is, I would use the paper stock and printing processes to make each one a little more special.

Concept and Process

For this 2008 piece for former Drive-By Trucker Jason Isbell, I used visual allusions from his standout DBT’s tracks and his then-new solo material to create a poster to sum up a lot of what I felt his vibe was coming out of the gate on his first solo tour with his new band The 400 Unit. This is still several years later one of the best logotypes I ever designed and its a shame it never made it onto a tee shirt. Fun fact: no one has ever (so far as I know) noticed the angel and devil hidden in the upper right and left corners respectively.

This was printed on speckled metallic paper in a rich black print to give the whole thing a kind of boilerplate sheen.
