!!! (Chk Chk Chk) poster 2010. 11X17" OFFSET ON ARCHIVAL MATTE CARDSTOCK.
This !!! (Chk Chk Chk) poster is the first poster I did for Clay Nutting and his Sacramento-based Concerts4Charity in cooperation with Roderick Mar Carpio's Record Club Sacramento. The trick to doing a !!! (Chk Chk Chk) poster is finding a way to graphically represent the band name in a way thats clever and in some ways oblique. Furthermore, it was the summer of Christopher Nolan's Inception so everybody had puzzles on the brain.
I had the idea of doing the three exclamation points as mazes, with retro stylized sci-fi olympians scurrying through them only to find themselves trapped in a kind of no man's land purgatory once they reached the end and tripped out into the void. I also liked the idea of skewing the perspective and adding a second floor to the mazes floating in the ether high above the main "game board' (as it were).
I've always found BBC interstitials of the late 70s/early 80s to be a bit creepy in a kind of spooky Doctor Who sort of way so the text treatment is decidedly stark and utilitarian in that way. I was (over)using Staid Gothic before it became übertrendy to do so (dammit JJ Abrams), and sometimes I miss how striking it used to look rooted half in how unexpected it was to see it.
Fun Fact: hese mazes were designed to actually work too. Each piece is a fully functioning maze, should one not mind marking up their poster, though I guess you could do it on a sheet of tracing paper laid over the top, if one were so inclined.
Sometimes I wonder if anyone ever tried to solve them.

Ranking R.E.M. Album Covers I was inspired by a friend’s Facebook thread about underrated late-period R.E.M. albums to create a ranking of the band’s album covers. Aesthetically. A ranking covering all their studio recordings from 1982 to their breakup in 2011. The ranking doesn’t include compilations or live albums, although I am including Dead Letter Office because … Read More
Summer is (finally) here. Time for fewer clothes, more colorful drinks, and poolside jams. To that end here comes a brilliant new Magic Tape from DJ/producer The Magician. It’s an ace new slate of indie disco and house in a more chill mode and it is going to sound straight up perfect at the beach … Read More
In the summer of 2015, I received an email out of the blue from a production company in Ireland working on a 6-part TV series about “a creative bunch of teenagers who get together to start a band. The group embark on a journey out of their rural town and onto a national stage.” It … Read More
13, Broke, Curious, Bored The moment is indelibly burnt into my memory. Every Sunday morning, I’d pick through the day’s edition of the Omaha World Herald, digging through sooty inserts and box store circulars to more or less fixate on the comics, entertainment section, the ads. What I ultimately was after were the record store flyouts: rows … Read More
