HANDSOME FURS POSTER (2010). 11X17″ OFFSET ON ARCHIVAL MATTE CARDSTOCK.
A poster I was asked to do by Sacramento’s Concerts 4 Charity in the summer of 2010 (along with this one for hometown heroes !!!) for Montreal noise/synth/rock band Handsome Furs a fantastic band who sadly are no more.
As the band's music and stage presence had a current of sex and tension flowing through them, I wanted to find a way to capture that in the design. I also wanted things to be a bit shocking and perhaps even a little unnerving. The image both is and isn't what you think it is. It's a stylization of an idea of genitalia presented in a way that isn't sexy but still possesses a sexuality. A dispassionate razor wedge of hot pink slices up through the composition to create negative space and with it a visual tension against the descending droplet. Is it blood? Sweat? A tear? The Poster refuses to commit, and from that comes even more tension. And of course theres the hair (or fur). Or is it a plume of rising smoke? Heat from the eyeball at center, and from that the (male?) gaze, as it were.
The band loved the posters and in fact said the design was one of the better ones they'd seen for that tour. Who knows, perhaps they were just being nice but it always feels good to have the act you designed for affirm that you were on the right track with your concept and execution.

Ranking R.E.M. Album Covers I was inspired by a friend’s Facebook thread about underrated late-period R.E.M. albums to create a ranking of the band’s album covers. Aesthetically. A ranking covering all their studio recordings from 1982 to their breakup in 2011. The ranking doesn’t include compilations or live albums, although I am including Dead Letter Office because … Read More
Summer is (finally) here. Time for fewer clothes, more colorful drinks, and poolside jams. To that end here comes a brilliant new Magic Tape from DJ/producer The Magician. It’s an ace new slate of indie disco and house in a more chill mode and it is going to sound straight up perfect at the beach … Read More
In the summer of 2015, I received an email out of the blue from a production company in Ireland working on a 6-part TV series about “a creative bunch of teenagers who get together to start a band. The group embark on a journey out of their rural town and onto a national stage.” It … Read More
13, Broke, Curious, Bored The moment is indelibly burnt into my memory. Every Sunday morning, I’d pick through the day’s edition of the Omaha World Herald, digging through sooty inserts and box store circulars to more or less fixate on the comics, entertainment section, the ads. What I ultimately was after were the record store flyouts: rows … Read More
