Drive-By Truckers Poster 2014 Sacramento is one of the most ambitious posters I’ve ever worked on. While I have—at times—illustrated things here and there, I’m really not much of an illustrator. Still, I knew that for this Drive-By Truckers poster I wanted to do something completely different than my quieter 2008 piece for the band. I wanted to ditch the artsy stuff and the subtlety and just make a Balls Out Rock Poster. I wanted to do it in day-glo inks. I wanted it to scream under black light. And finally, I wanted it to be illustrated. I knew the image that I wanted in my head and I just started drawing it out in Illustrator. There were two major humps I had to get over for the poster to even exist: 1. I had to pull off the truck and then if that succeeded, I needed to figure out how I was going to draw a snake, scales and all. I was on a cross-country flight when I finally got the snake working and at that moment I was so happy. “I am going to land this thing”, I thought to myself. And here it is. 4-color Day Glo screen print on heavy 18×24 paper. Try and find the semi-hidden homages to Convoy and Smokey and the Bandit.
