Technology frees me to get weird with it
To say that the iPad Pro (and the Procreate App in particular) have freed my gigposter process up would be a massive understatement.
Where on past posters I would spend countless hours plotting meticulously with the bezier pen trying to get every angle and detail down, having it all flow from a digital pen removes so many of those frustrating speedbumps and now I can just let the madness out a little more. Having a project like this one of course helps as well. Death Valley Girls have precisely the kind of sound and vibe that allows me to indulge my perpetual indulgences for Alejandro Jodorowsky– style desert-centric weirdo art (you’ll note the Holy Mountain reference on the back of the horseman’s jacket) and other saturated LSD references as well. And the support acts Pure Hex and Fauxes reinforce this vibe guaranteeing it will be a surreal , trippy, essential show for all that see it.
This entire poster (I’d say a good 98.9%) was done on a roadtrip to LA so I often had the actual desert out the window to use for inspiration. And this is one of a recent number of posters I’ve done designed entirely in Procreate on a 12″ iPad pro.

Ranking R.E.M.’s Album Covers Aesthetically 1982-2011
I was inspired by a friend’s Facebook thread about underrated late-period R.E.M. albums to create a ranking of the band’s album covers. Aesthetically. A ranking covering all their studio recordings from 1982 to their breakup in 2011. The ranking doesn’t include compilations or live albums, although I am including Dead Letter Office…
Our Band Could Be Your Typography Lesson
13. BROKE. CURIOUS. BORED. The moment is burnt indelibly into my memory. Every Sunday morning, I’d pick through the day’s edition of the Omaha World Herald (I'm a Nebraska boy. Or at least was for my first 25 years), and I was leafing through inky inserts and box store circulars…
