GIG POSTERS

Queens of the Stone Age Poster Sacramento 2005

"Queens of the Stone Age and Eagles of Death Metal gig poster by Jason Malmberg, featuring a moth-winged skull figure inside an ornate arched frame, circled by bats with spiderweb and 45 record adapter details, for the May 2005 Empire Sacramento show"

CONCEPT AND PROCESS

At the time (May 2005) this Queens of the Stone Age poster was my most ambitious gigposter yet. For the (damn perfect) double-bill with Eagles of Death Metal, I went deep on every piece of 70s stoner, satanic, occult, druggy imagery I could dream up, then couched it all inside a stylized skull. They were touring Lullabies to Paralyze at the time, and that record fed a lot of what ended up in the composition: mutant sheep, benignly spooky bats, spiders, spiderwebs. With the band’s scuzzy 70s stoner-rock aesthetic already baked in, I worked in some vinyl record imagery too, including 45 adapters reimagined as quasi-religious cult symbols. This one printed beautifully: a 3-color screenprint on a metallic, speckled “nude” stock.
