This limited edition Kings of Leon poster was the second of three designs I created for the band’s 2017 summer tour in partnership with Nakatomi Inc.. The print measures 12 by 18 inches and uses three colors to recreate the look and feel of a mid-80s VHS cassette cover. Think of a slightly sun-faded thriller you might find on the shelf at a video store. Something starring Eric Roberts during the golden age of late night Cinemax programming.

A Cherry Motif with History

The idea for the artwork came from the band’s suggestion that each poster in the series incorporate cherries in some way. The cherry motif goes way back with Kings of Leon, and they were hoping this run of prints would nod to that history. My challenge was to avoid placing cherries into the composition as a visual afterthought. I wanted them to guide the concept or at least act as a creative co-pilot.

The First of Five Total Designs

Although this was released as the second print in the series, it was actually my first concept for what was intended to be a three-poster set. That three-poster plan eventually expanded to five designs over the course of the 2017 US tour. The band responded strongly to the tone of this approach and appreciated that I like experimenting with a range of design styles. This project became one of those gratifying creative loops where the client’s enthusiasm helped push the work even further.
